How to Follow the Money
Tracking the money spent by candidates and political campaigns in California can be complicated. The following resources will get you started:
Browse California Campaign Filings

To browse complete campaign finance filings by current elected officials and candidates running for legislative and statewide office in California, visit the Secretary of State's CAL-ACCESS web site. This site will also give you access to political party and ballot measure campaign filings. Browsable filings go back to the 2000 primary election.
Search California Campaign Filings

To conduct a search of campaign finance filings by current elected officials and candidates running for legislative and statewide office in California, visit the Advanced Reports section of the Secretary of State's CAL-ACCESS web site. This site will also allow you to search political party and ballot measure campaign filings. Searchable data goes back to the 2000 primary election.
View Contribution and Expenditure Limits

A chart of limits on contributions to state candidates and voluntary expenditure limits for candidates for elective state offices is available on the Fair Political Practices Commission web site.
Access Federal Candidate Campaign Filings

To view and search campaign finance filings for candidates for the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, you will need to visit the Federal Election Commission web site. Additional information and analysis is available through the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics.
