California has 52 representatives in the U.S. House of Representatives - more than any other state. Each member of the House represents about 540,000 people and is elected to a two-year term. House members earn an annual salary of $130,000. California also has two seats in the United States Senate, neither of which will be up for election this year.
The 1995-96 Congressional session marked the first time since 1955 when Republicans held a majority of House seats, resulting in the first Republican Speaker in thirty years. Many "inside the beltway" folks in Washington, D.C. are watching the congressional races closely to see if the Republicans will maintain their majority in the 1997-98 session. Several California congressional districts are targeted by both major parties as "contested", which means that the major-party candidates running in those districts are likely to receive strong financial and non-monetary support from congressional and party leaders and powerful interest groups. If you live in one of these targeted districts, you are likely to receive more mail and phone calls from the campaigns than those who live in districts that are not targeted by the major parties.
Below is a list of California's 52 congressional districts; each file contains a list of the candidates running in each district, their party affiliation and contact information. You will also find here links to candidates' web sites, which typically feature campaign literature, endorsement lists, position papers, and information about how to contribute or volunteer.
If you're not sure which district you live in, the California Voter Foundation has compiled some information to help you find out. Links to other web sites featuring additional information and resources about the congressional races are also available.
