CALIFORNIA LEGISLATIVE RACES
|The California State Legislature is made up of two houses; the Assembly is the lower
house, and is comprised of 80 representatives. Each Assembly member represents about
400,000 people, and receives an annual salary of $75,600 (members who serve in leadership
positions earn between $83,160 - $90,720). An Assembly member is elected to a two-year
term, and is limited to serving three terms. California's legislative districts are
"nested", so that two Assembly districts comprise one Senate district.
The California Voter Foundation has compiled information on each of the 80 California Assembly races and 20 State Senate seats up this year. Follow the links to find a list of the candidates running in each district, their party affiliation and contact information. You will also find here links to candidates' web sites, which typically feature campaign literature, endorsement lists, position papers, and information about how to contribute or volunteer.
You will also find links to profiles of every legislative district, providing demographic, political and community information. These district profiles were written by political science students at the University of California at Davis, in partnership with the California Voter Foundation. Also available are political district maps, produced by the University of California at Berkeley's Institute for Governmental Studies.
If you're not sure which district you live in, the California Voter Foundation has compiled some information to help you find out. You can also search this voter guide by a candidate's name to find out which district they are running in. Visit the California Voter Foundation's Internet Guide to California's Legislature for more information about the legislative process, searching for bills on the Internet, and other helpful resources.
