That started with the Declaration of Independence.
“We won’t be ruled by kings,” we said. With freedom in our sights
We drafted a Constitution, and enacted a Bill of Rights.

The people would elect leaders by voting for their fave
The states were left to decide the time, manner and place. Time, manner and place.
Over centuries, new laws passed, constitutional rights proclaimed
Details of how to implement were left up to the states. Left up to the states.

While voting options and ID laws vary from state to state
You must be a U.S. citizen to participate. To participate
Wherever you vote, your ballot’s got safeguards in every state
Teams of people count and ensure results are accurate. Results are accurate.

Though we have a crazy quilt of laws with many variations
Lots of voting rights extend to everyone in the nation. Everyone in the nation!
